Description
Melanie is an old-fashioned wife, married to Linton, a wealthy but tight-fisted stockbroker with high hopes of becoming an important member of the local Conservative party. She believes that a wife should do all she possibly can for her husband, and is busily engaged in ironing his underwear when Daphne, their 17-year-old daughter, enters and takes her to task for her attitude. Daphne is going out with a political radical, the direct opposite of Linton in his attitude. Melanie tries to persuade Linton to look for a new house in the city, because they live so far from civilization that no one ever visits them. He refuses to consider any change but finally agrees to allow her to have a new closet fitted for her clothes. Roger, a rugged, handsome carpenter, arrives and immediately falls in love with Melanie. Daphne, shocked, sees them kissing and accuses her mother of being unfaithful. Melanie denies this and Daphne, knowing her mother's old-fashioned attitude, realizes that she is mistaken. Daphne decides she will make a play for Roger herself and traps him into a very passionate kiss, witnessed by Linton, who is furious. He tells Melanie, who can't understand Roger's behaviour, because he has already asked her to run away with him. When Linton demands that she organize a party for him on July 4, for 60 or 70 guests with only a day's notice, she finally decides that she has had enough. She tells her daughter and husband that she is leaving, but neither of them believes her. She telephones Roger to make sure that he hasn't changed his mind, finds that Daphne instigated the kiss and confirms that she will go away with him when he arrives in 15 minutes. The other two try to persuade her to change her mind, but she is adamant. Finally, when the doorbell rings and she is about to leave, Linton tells her, for the first time ever, that he loves her. She stops, hesitant, and we do not know if she is about to leave or not as the lights fade. - from Amzon
